Assisted Dying Bill Update: Friday 13 June 2025

An Update on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.png new
MPs debated and voted on some more amendments to the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which would legalise assisted dying in some cases. This is in the case of terminally ill people who are in the opinion of a doctor and a panel, in the final 6 months.
Some amendments passed without a vote, because no MPs objected:
1. Protect any worker who doesn’t want to take part in providing assisted dying, so that they can’t be disadvantaged because of their beliefs.
2. Another means that if a doctor doesn’t want to provide assisted dying for a patient, that patient can request a different doctor who will provide it.
3. A third is to make doctors who don’t want to provide assisted dying write a report, explaining why they’re not doing it.
4. The Government must publish rules for what substances can be used in assisted dying.
5. To ban all adverts for assisted dying services.
6. A sixth forces the Government to consult with various groups, including people with learning disabilities and hospices, before publishing rules on how assisted dying can be provided.
7. The last one requires information about assisted dying to be provided in Welsh for Welsh speakers.
We also voted on some amendments. There was one amendment on an amendment above, so that there would be fewer exceptions to the ban on adverts. I voted against this one, because I believe the original amendment was strong enough.
I also voted against an amendment that would have banned doctors from raising assisted dying as an option with patients, unless patients ask. I want patients to be given all their options so they can make an informed choice, as long as they’re not pressured. MPs voted to reject that amendment.
The last amendment was to ban doctors from offering assisted dying to under-18s. I voted for that amendment, because children are more likely to feel pressured. That amendment passed.
We’ll be debating the Bill again next Friday so I will share another update with you then. In the meantime, please keep getting in touch to share your views and stories by emailing me at: shaun.davies.mp@parliament.uk. Let’s keep this important conversation going.
