Shaun Davies, Member of Parliament for Telford, has received confirmation that Madeley Court Hotel has now closed and will no longer be used as an asylum hotel.

Since becoming the MP for Telford, Shaun has continuously pursued the closure of Madeley Court Hotel, declaring that hopping from hotel to hotel is simply not a suitable for people who seek asylum, and the hotel in Madeley should be restored for community purpose.

In Parliament, Shaun has challenged Ministers and met directly with both the Prime Minister and Home Office Ministers, with the focus of pushing for the immediate closure of the hotel and securing commitment that Telford will not be used again for Home Office accommodation.

There is no current Home Office-approved premises in the Telford constituency, and previous occupants of the hotel have had their claims for asylum looked into – granting them refugee status to work and live in the UK, or, if unsuccessful, deported from the UK.

Shaun commented “I welcome the closure, not only so the hotel can be returned to community use, but because it is simply not the right place for individuals to live for months on end. The use of Madeley Court Hotel is the legacy of the Conservative Government, and reforming their broken asylum system is the way forward, not continual use of hotels.

“The decision to close the hotel is the right move towards fixing the situation and being fair to all – fair to the community, and fair to people seeking asylum as staying in a hotel was never right. I will be working with the hotel owners to ensure sufficient steps are now taken to return the hotel back to it’s original use.”

It has now been confirmed that the hotel is empty and will no longer accommodate asylum seekers, with the MP writing to the hotel owners to establish a clear picture for the future of the hotel. There have been many questions and concerns regarding the closure, which the MP attempts to answer in this video, any further questions residents are encouraged to contact the MP directly: shaun.davies.mp@parliament.uk
