Last week Shaun Davies MP joined Telford & Wrekin CVS to host an event bringing unpaid carers together to have their say in the Government’s Make Work Pay consultation before it closes on 1 September.
The Government consultation is seeking views on whether current employment rights and workplace support for parents and unpaid carers of seriously ill children are meeting people’s needs, and what changes could help more carers balance work, education and their caring responsibilities. It follows the Government’s launch of its Action Plan to Support Unpaid Carers which sets out a programme to improve recognition of unpaid carers and strengthen the support available to them.
As part of the consultation, the Government is asking for views on questions including:
- Whether official recognition as an unpaid carer would make a meaningful difference.
- Whether carers want to remain in work or education while providing care.
- What practical support would help carers balance employment or study with their caring responsibilities.
As part of his commitment to supporting unpaid carers, Shaun worked with the National Trust to provide every carer attending the event with a free pass to visit local National Trust sites and Ironbridge museums this summer, helping families enjoy valuable time together and offering carers the chance to take a well-deserved break.

The Make Work Pay consultation is part of the Government’s wider commitment to improving employment rights and ensuring work is compatible with family life and caring responsibilities.
Shaun is encouraging local carers, parents, employers and organisations supporting carers to submit their views before the consultation closes on 1 September.
