Shaun Davies MP Leads Cross-Party Call for Long Service Awards for Magistrates

This week in Parliament, Shaun Davies MP for Telford, has again called for the introduction of long service awards for magistrates across England and Wales, recognising their vital contribution to the justice system.

In a letter which is co-signed by MPs from across the political spectrum, Shaun urged the Lord Chancellor to introduce a formal long service recognition scheme to honour magistrates who have dedicated years—often decades—of service to their local communities.

Speaking in the House of Commons this week, Shaun raised the issue again directly with Minister of Justice Sarah Sackman who said that she would work with him to see this happen.

Shaun commented: ‘Magistrates are the unsung heroes of our justice system. Many give up their time for over 20 or even 30 years to serve their communities. It is only right that their service is recognised formally and publicly.’

The letter which previously had support from more than 30 MPs, demonstrates broad political consensus on the need to improve recognition for this vital group. Currently, there is no national scheme in place to acknowledge long-serving magistrates in a visible way. The proposed initiative would mirror similar schemes available in other areas of public service, such as the police and armed forces.

Shaun is also pushing for urgent reforms to improve Telford and wider Shropshire’s struggling court system. He recently met with Sarah Sackman in Telford to highlight key concerns. While welcoming the Government’s court reform plans, Shaun is pushing for investment and capacity to ensure the justice system works for Telford people.

Shaun and the wider group of MPs hope this call to action will result in swift adoption of a recognition scheme that reflects the magistracy’s enduring contribution to justice and civic life.
