It’s been a busy few weeks recently particularly with recent Remembrance events across Telford. I was honoured to attend a service in Oakengates and in Malinslee this year; both wonderful events offering such a special tribute to remember those who have lost their lives for our nation, and who are still fighting for our freedoms. Whilst I was at Oakengates, six brilliant Telford people laid wreaths on my behalf in different services across Telford, a huge thank you to them. Events like these remind me what it truly means to come together as a community to honour those who lost their lives.
I’m looking forward to getting out across our town for first light switch on in the next few weeks – I can’t quite believe we are on the run up to the festive period. I’m looking forward to meeting with lots of you during the various festive events. And in case you missed it, Telford’s tree of light has officially been switched on in the town centre, so head down there to take a look or donate online to dedicate a spot on the tree for your loved one.
This time of year, is particularly busy for Parliament especially as we head to the budget. As always, I have been putting myself front and centre in parliament at any opportunity to interject on issues that I can input on based on conversations I’ve had with many of you across Telford.
The Government has commissioned an independent report on youth unemployment, to identify the things keeping our young people out of work, education and training. It’s vital, both for our economy and for our young people themselves, that we solve this crisis of opportunity, and give them the skills and the chance to unlock their potential. I welcome this report to help us fix the system, and I’ll keep working with local institutions like Telford College to solve the problem locally.
Last week, we heard various updates around armed forces and veterans including investing £29m in Op VALOUR, which offers wraparound support to veterans through Veterans’ Support Hubs, and £12m in Op FORTITUDE, which provides essential services to veterans at risk of homelessness. Armed Forces families are the lifeblood of Telford’s community, and this support will help them live free and independent lives after serving. They gave so much for our nation; it’s only right they receive the support they deserve.
Last week I was honoured to host the launch of the Lingen Davies Cancer Support Sunflower Campaign in Parliament, joined by Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who spoke powerfully about the need to improve access to cancer care. This was a special event for so many people and for me seeing Telford faces in parliament to raise awareness of the campaign which will deliver a new Chemotherapy Centre at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital was a special moment. It will double cancer treatment capacity and end the need for local patients to travel to Shrewsbury for vital care. No one in Telford should have to face gruelling treatment and then endure long journeys just to access the care they need. This new centre will bring life-changing treatment, comfort, and dignity right here to our town. I was proud to stand up for Telford, standing shoulder to shoulder with every volunteer, trustee, and supporter driving this campaign forward. Huge thanks to everyone at Lingen Davies, local supporters, businesses, and volunteers who attended the event. Please visit their website to see how best you can support them in their appeal.
Next up in November is my 1-1 surgery which will be in Telford Town Centre, to book an appointment please visit my website. Having those important face-to-face conversations guides my work in Parliament to best serve you and Telford’s priorities.
