Telford MP hands over petition to Police and Crime Commissioner at West Mercia

Shaun Davies, MP for Telford, has formally handed over the resident petition to the Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion, at West Mercia this Friday. The petition voices a strong opposition to the 8pm patrol cap on PCSOs working hours.

The proposal, part of a £350,000 budget-saving measure by West Mercia Police, would affect communities across the region, including Telford. PCSOs play a vital role in maintaining public safety and visibility, particularly during evening hours when incidents of anti-social behaviour tend to rise.

Shaun Davies expressed concern that the proposed cuts come despite a £39 million increase in policing funds from the Labour government, reducing valuable local police presence that Telford residents deserve.

Shaun commented: “This petition is a clear and united message from Telford residents that they do not agree with the 8pm cap. I urge the Police and Crime Commissioner to rethink his decision, to give Telford residents the reassurance that they deserve into the later hours.

Lesley, a resident from Overdale & The Rock, added “I strongly support the need for PCSOs to continue to work past 8pm to support the communities of Telford to remain as crime free as possible. Crime and anti-social behaviour don’t stop at 8pm, in fact it’s more likely to occur after. Telford residents deserve their support.”

This Labour Government has given West Mercia Police significant funding over the last year, allowing for expansion of resources not reduction.

The petition was launched to give Telford the opportunity to voice their concerns over the capped hours. It’s strong response reflects the widespread concern over the potential impact on local policing.
