Shaun Davies MP has welcomed the start of construction on the new Captain Matthew Webb Swimming and Fitness Centre, a major investment he championed during his time as council leader.
The new first-class leisure facility for Telford which is funded by Telford & Wrekin Council will be built at Telford Langley School and has been designed to meet the town’s growing demand for modern leisure provision.
Shaun Davies MP has consistently pushed for a new pool, determined to ensure Telford’s leisure offer is one the community can be proud of. Once complete, the centre will support up to 150,000 swims each year and expand learn-to-swim provision by 150 additional places every week. Residents will benefit from modern health and fitness facilities, and the project will create around 20 new local jobs. The new facilities are expected to open in 2027.
Shaun has also ensured that the new pool site at Telford Langley School will commemorate the memory of 12-year-old student Joshua Lloyd who died after collapsing in June 2023.
Shaun Davies MP said: “This is a fantastic milestone for Telford. Securing a new swimming pool has been something I have worked hard for over many years, and it’s great to see construction now underway.
“This centre will be a lasting legacy to Captain Matthew Webb, but more importantly it will serve the people of Telford supporting fitness, leisure and really importantly helping more young people learn to swim. Our local council is already the largest provider of children’s swimming lessons in the borough through its Swim4Life programme, and this new facility will allow that provision to expand even further. Consultation showed clear demand for these services, and I’m proud that our Labour council is delivering for local people.”
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We’re delighted that work has now started on the Captain Matthew Webb Swimming and Fitness Centre. As a council, we are fully funding this project and working closely with the school and the MP for Telford to bring this fantastic new swimming and leisure facility to life.”
