Shaun Davies, Member of Parliament for Telford, was asked to visit a class of Sixth Form students last week at Telford College’s new town centre campus as part of the College’s Democracy Themed Week.
The Sixth Form, which opened its doors last month, is located in the heart of Telford town centre, making further education more accessible to young people across the town.
Shaun spoke to students about his journey into politics, why he became Telford’s Member of Parliament and what the role involves. Students also led a Q&A session with the MP, covering a wide range of issues from the use of Artificial Intelligence, the changes to the use of social media and the current voting age.
Shaun commented “It was brilliant to spend time with students at Telford College and hear their views on some important, current issues that matter to them. I always enjoy meeting young people across Telford, and these conversations are a great reminder of why it is so important that they understand how our democracy works and feel able to have their voices heard.
“I hope sessions like this help make politics feel a little more accessible and encourage more young people to get involved.”
Telford College’s Vice Principal, Claire Snik, commented “It was a really valuable opportunity for our students to meet their local MP and ask questions directly about Parliament, democracy and issues that matter to them. The students engaged really well with the discussion, and it was great to see them growing in confidence as the session progressed. Opportunities like this help bring politics and democracy to life beyond the classroom.”
A Sixth Form Student added “It was really interesting to be able to ask questions directly and hear about what being an MP involves. It made Parliament and politics feel much more relevant and gave us the chance to discuss issues that affect young people, and the work experience opportunity sounds great.”
This visit is one of several visits Shaun has made to school settings across Telford this year. These visits form part of his ongoing efforts to connect with young people across Telford, hear their views and help them understand how they can get involved with their community.
