Telford MP Shaun Davies brought together 48 local businesses to donate and take part in a World Cup sweepstake in support of the Lingen Davies Sunflower Appeal.
The initiative saw local businesses sign up to be randomly allocated a team for this summer’s World Cup competition, with Telford & Wrekin Council doubling the funds through match funding.
The official team allocation draw was held live with the MP and Lingen Davies Cancer Support team, marking the start of the competition and celebrating funds raised by local businesses.
The money raised will support the Sunflower Appeal, which aims to fund the development of a brand-new Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Princess Royal Hospital. The new facility will double chemotherapy capacity and bring vital cancer treatment closer to home for thousands of people across the region.
Naomi Atkin, CEO of Lingen Davies, commented “thanks to Shaun for yet again bringing the business community together in support of local cancer services.
“We’re extremely grateful to Shaun Davies MP for harnessing the interest and imagination of the business community in this way. We are approaching the first million pounds of this campaign to bring cancer services to Telford, and this fundraiser will take us even closer to that milestone.
“Thanks to everyone for their donations so far – good luck!”
Shaun Davies MP said, “I am immensely proud of the generosity shown by businesses across Telford. Together, they have helped raise more than £14,000 for a cause that will make a real difference to local families facing cancer.
“The Sunflower Appeal is aiming to raise £5 million by 2029, so I want to support them in every way I can. The new Cancer Centre will be a game changer for our town, and the support shown by local businesses demonstrates the incredible spirit that we have in our community.”
The World Cup competition commences on the 11th of June, with participating businesses battling it out to win a £200 voucher for a meal at the Brewery Inn in Coalport.
